We are proud to announce that we have been shortlisted for the 2025 Pitched Roofing Awards, not once, but THREE times!
Best use of a heritage roof
All Saints C of E Church, Hastings
Richard Soan Roofing Services with Copford Saw Mill All Saints Church is a Grade II* listed building with origins dating back to the early 15th century, constructed between 1417 and 1430. Over time, the south porch roof had deteriorated significantly, with the original Horsham stone slate fixings failing. This resulted in displaced slates, creating a potential hazard for pedestrians below.
The project involved the careful removal of the existing roof coverings, with all salvaged Horsham stone slates meticulously set aside for re-use. New oak battens were installed to provide a robust framework, and the original stone slates were reinstated to preserve the historic character and integrity of the structure.
In addition, the failed rainwater goods were replaced with a traditional Longbottom cast iron system, faithfully replicating the original design to maintain the building’s historic appearance.
The works were carried out under the expert supervision of Mark Anderson of John D Clarke Architects, ensuring that conservation principles were upheld throughout and that the restored porch roof remains true to its 15th-century heritage.

Glebelands School Richard Soan Roofing with wienerberger Sandtoft and Permavent Glebelands School, part of the Learning Partners Academy Trust, serves students aged 11 to 16. The school was experiencing persistent water ingress due to deteriorating pitched roof coverings, posing risks to both the learning environment and the building’s long-term integrity. This comprehensive re-roofing project involved the full replacement of all pitched roof coverings, a significant upgrade to insulation in line with current standards, and the renewal of rainwater goods. The works have not only resolved ongoing maintenance issues but have also enhanced thermal performance and ensured a safe, dry, and comfortable environment for students and staff for years to come.

The Hawthorns School
Richard Soan Roofing Services with Keymer Tiles
The Hawthorns is a Grade II* listed property which was originally a house but has since been converted for use as a private school. It was constructed between 1617 and 1624 and then later extended in the 1880s then listed in 1958. A brick-built building with pitched, handmade clay tiled roof, ornate chimneys, lead run out gutters, parapets with clay copings and lead rainwater goods. The project involved the complete removal and replacement of pitched roof coverings to a large section of the property. Works also incorporated chimney repairs and repointing, brickwork repairs, render repairs, replacement lead flashings, various timber repairs and installation of bird deterrents as well as thermal performance upgrades. We acted as principal contractor with Synergy Construction and Property Consultants acting as Principal Designer on behalf of the client. The client required the works to be undertaken partially during term time but with minimal disruption to the functioning of the school.
