The Hawthorns School

Winner 2025 Pitched Roofing Awards - Best Use of Concrete or Clay Tiles for a Commercial Project

The Hawthorns is a Grade II* listed property which was originally a house but has since been converted for use as a private school. It was constructed between 1617 and 1624 and then later extended in the 1880s then listed in 1958. A brick-built building with pitched, handmade clay tiled roof, ornate chimneys, lead run out gutters, parapets with clay copings and lead rainwater goods. The project involved the complete removal and replacement of pitched roof coverings to a large section of the property. Works also incorporated chimney repairs and repointing, brickwork repairs, render repairs, replacement lead flashings, various timber repairs and installation of bird deterrents as well as thermal performance upgrades. We acted as principal contractor with Synergy Construction and Property Consultants acting as Principal Designer on behalf of the client. The client required the works to be undertaken partially during term time but with minimal disruption to the functioning of the school.
