PENDYKE

Tiling

Pendyke is a large detached dwelling in a picturesque setting overlooking the South Downs. The clients wished to renew the failing roof coverings to avoid ongoing repair costs. During initial discussions it was decided that a new tile should be used to provide a long lifespan but it was also important to use a tile which would be sympathetic to the age and character of the property after being given tile samples they chose to go ahead with Sandtoft Goxhill.

The roof is a traditional hand cut and pitched roof with 16 different roof slopes. Various details such as bonnet hips and tiled valleys meant all battening had to intersect around the property. There were also large ornate chimneys and various conservation rooflights to weather as well as lead run out gutters. The existing roof was boarded so required us to t a treated timber counter batten.

The roof was installed using natural materials and traditional methods such as mortar bedding. This was important to retain the charm and character of the building.
